Katie Bain Tackles TrekFest against the odds

On Saturday 2nd September, Katie Bain, Administrator for Stannah Lifts Services Ltd attempted the UK’s ultimate trekking challenge TrekFest. Katie was taking part in the 50km trek across the Peak District to raise money for Unicef.

Renowned for its scenery and breath-taking views, the Peak District is considered one of Britain’s most inspiring National Parks. The 50km route starts in the Hope Valley, the heart of the Peak District and home to picturesque and ancient landscapes.

This was Katie’s first time of attempting this or indeed any trekking challenge and after months of hard-work and training Katie was ready (along with a group of 3 friends), to take on the challenge.

Unfortunately, though, fate had other ideas and at around 15km into the trek, an old, long-forgotten sports injury started to cause Katie serious pain and she began to struggle to carry on. Having been advised that Katie shouldn’t continue the 50km route, she refused to let this stop her. Katie instead, carried on trekking for another 10km (just over 6 miles) to complete the 25km route.

By carrying-on despite the odds, Katie has managed to raise £680 and thanks to the pledge from Stannah to match funds raised by 150 per cent (to mark this year’s 150th anniversary), the grand total is set to reach a whopping £1,450.

The funds raised will help to support the important work of Unicef, the leading organisation working for children, who help to ensure that more of the world’s children are vaccinated, educated and protected. Unicef has done more to influence laws and policies to help protect children than anyone else and they rely entirely on charitable donations to fund their vital work to protect children, transform their lives and build a safer world for tomorrow’s children.

Katie says that it was the thought of the important work her chosen charity does that kept her going, despite the injury.

Katie says that she is still “thrilled to have received so many generous donations and to have taken part in TrekFest”

“The 150 per cent match-funding from Stannah and the thought of how Unicef could use that money really helped to keep me going, even through the pain.”
