Stannah Communications Manager completes 150km charity challenge
Marcia Johnson completes 150km skating charity challenge for the Countess of Brecknock Hospice
Marcia Johnson, Communications Manager for Stannah Lift Services Ltd has completed a 150km skating charity challenge to raise funds for the Countess of Brecknock Trust.
Marcia has managed to raise over £900 for the local hospice and, thanks to the pledge from Stannah to match funds raised by 150 per cent (to mark this year’s 150th anniversary), the grand total has reached a whopping £2,250 and is still rising.
Marcia completed the gruelling 150km skating challenge (which equates to 93.2 miles), in six parts, over 11 hours throughout the summer.
45km of the distance was covered during the South Coast Roll Event at Goodwood Motor Circuit on the 18th June, and another 45km was ticked off when Marcia completed the South-East Roller Marathon at Dorney Lakes (home of the London 2012 Olympics rowing event) on Sunday 30th July. Marcia finished the final 60km in her own time, through family outings at Southsea and by roller-skating at Brooklands Racing Circuit near Weybridge.
The funds raised will help to support the crucial services the Countess of Brecknock Trust provides. Originally founded with the Support of Macmillan Cancer relief, the trust has been providing care and community support since it was set up in 1990.
The trust’s day hospice service, (available Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10am-3pm), can accommodate up to 15 patients and enables a break from routine for patients as well as essential respite for their full-time careers.
Their inpatient unit comprises of six individual patient rooms with en-suite facilities, as well as a communal lounge and family room areas, all overseen by a dedicated team consultant in Palliative Medicine, general doctors, a nursing team, therapists and even a counsellor.
Although Marcia confesses that she has always enjoyed roller-skating, taking on a challenge of such a large scale was no easy feat; especially as Marcia admits that before completing this challenge she wasn’t a particularly active person.
“It’s got me out and got me roller-skating again which has been great. I also wanted to do something to raise money that was a little different and thankfully, the level of support I have received has made it worthwhile.”
The charity also means a lot to Marcia personally as her mother-in-law is currently using the hospice’s day service.
“I’m really pleased everyone has been so supportive and I just wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone that has sponsored me.
It’s fantastic that Stannah have match funded my efforts by 150% as it has meant that I’ve managed to raise even more vital funds for the hospice”
