Sam Edgell - Trainee Software Engineer at Stannah
As an independent, family-run British engineering business, Stannah has long been a champion of apprenticeships, dating right back to the 1800s and our founder Joseph Stannah. We have apprentices right across our business, one of them is trainee software engineer, Sam Edgell.
Sam explains; “My day to day roles includes checking our build server to see if our codes have run overnight and if not why, deep investigation on bugs and faults, interacting with my team if any problems arise and finding out how to fix them, working on individual projects and having little coding tasks set out for me to complete.
I have developed many of my skills in electronics and computing. I feel valued and respected by everyone at Stannah and not just a number on a system – it’s a nice feeling.
My involvement with projects makes me more eager to get involved in more and more. My manager is excellent, I am glad to have him as a role model; I receive endless amounts of support. It’s easy to get support whenever I need it and there is always someone there.
There are many company events to bring everyone together and we also do voluntary work which is an excellent gesture.
Stannah take pride in their work and so they should, they want the best for everyone and will always ensure to support that – there is no other company close to what Stannah can do. It is a great company and if you get the chance to come work with us, the opportunities are endless. I wake up and want to come to work every day, I enjoy it and not many people can say that nowadays. The opportunities are endless with Stannah and that is just one of the many great things about this company!”
So what advice would Sam give to someone starting out at Stannah? “Be yourself. Show that you want to learn, if you have the right attitude then you won’t fail. My interview was scary but that was because it meant so much to me!”
