From Apprentice to Repair Engineer: Craig's Story
We have more than 300 highly-trained lift engineers in 11 service branches all over the UK – so a Stannah lift engineer is never far away. Stannah repair engineer, Craig Biggs and has visited some interesting sites, including a nuclear facility, seeing the old experiment labs and wearing radiation monitoring equipment.
But what’s it like working as a Lift Engineer? Well, no two days are alike when working in a lift service and repair role, as Craig Biggs explains:
“Our stairlifts are so well known most people think that it is all a repair engineer fixes! I work on all types of lifts – from passenger lifts to platform lifts, escalators, moving walkways, service and goods lifts – but not the stairlifts.
My favourite thing about working for Stannah is that there is no ‘typical day’ I’ve spent months at some sites for major lift modernisation and refurbishment projects and weeks carrying out controller swaps and lift upgrades in between other, minor repairs.”
Craig has been working at Stannah for just over 3 years and when asked about what attracted him to the role he explained
“When I saw the role advertised I was excited by the prospect of getting involved with mechanical and electrical repairs, my father was an engineer and I grew up fixing bikes and cars with him, so engineering was a natural progression for me.
I didn’t fit the criteria for the traditional apprenticeship, but Stannah saw my value, supporting me throughout the process of gaining my qualifications.”
Craig is pleased to say that he has now completed two advanced apprenticeships, numerous level 3 college courses and two NVQs. In addition to this, he is hoping to start his NVQ 4 in performing testing operations in the lift and escalator industry next year.
