What is a lift engineer?
A lift engineer (aka elevator engineer or lift service technician) is a specialist who installs, services, maintains, repairs, and modernises lifts, escalators, and moving walkways.

What does a lift engineer do?
Lift engineers typically:
- Install and commission new lifts, escalators, travelators and related equipment.
- Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance — checking mechanical, electrical, hydraulic systems — and responding to emergency breakdowns, repairs, or passenger entrapments.
- Conduct site surveys, analyse technical diagrams, and ensure compliance with health and safety, building regulations, and lift industry standards.
- Upgrade, refurbish, and fit out cabins, doors, safety systems, control electronics, and other critical components.
- Produce documentation, such as service logs, risk assessments and certificates.

How do I become a lift engineer?
Common entry routes include:
- GCSEs: Achieve grades 9–4 (A*–C) in maths, English, and preferably design/engineering or physics.
- Apprenticeships: Intermediate (Level 2) or Advanced (Level 3) apprenticeships in Lift & Escalator Electro-Mechanic, stairlifts, etc..
- Further education: Complete vocational diplomas (e.g. Level 2/3 in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Lift & Escalator Technology) and NVQs (e.g. EOR202N).
- On-the-job experience: Many start as new starters or fitter’s mates, earning NVQs and industry qualifications on-site through bodies like LEIA.
- Higher qualifications: Progress to HNC/HND (Level 4) in Lift Engineering or Testing roles.

What qualifications do I need to be a lift engineer?
Essential qualifications often include:
- GCSEs in English and maths (Intermediate apprenticeship), and up to five GCSEs at grades 9–4 for Advanced apprenticeship.
- Vocational or technical courses in mechanical or electrical engineering.
- NVQ certifications specific to the industry, such as EOR202N, and Lift & Escalator Support Level 2 & 3.
- NVQ Level 4 for testing and higher technical roles (e.g. Testing of Passenger Lifts).
- A UK driving licence is typically required since travel to client sites is part of the role.
